The following are examples of the experiences we offer. We will work with you to craft the perfect schedule and itinerary.
Normandy
Pegasus Bridge
Pegasus Bridge is the site of the famous glider assault on the night of 5/6 June 1944. Portion of the film "The Longest Day" was actually filmed on the original bridge. The bridge spans the Caen Canal which parallels the Orne river. Discussions on this stand will focus on the difference between glider and parachute assault; weighing of the risks vs the operational effects and the importance of bridges for the campaign. We will compare the use if airborne forces for flank protection with the First World War use of cavalry for the same purpose. We will see how surgical actions may sometimes be taken to ensure success of your main effort.

Arromanches
The artificial harbor at Arromanche is one of 2 planned harbors that the Allied forces planned to take with them across the Channel. We will discuss the immense logistics challenge required to support the invasion force, the planning and design of the Mulberries and the command and control of the logistics operations.

Abbaye d'Ardennes.
This stand is located 5 km north-west of Caen and consists of a large historic abbey and grounds where a discussion on the German counter-moves against the advancing Canadians will take place. Also, the Abbey is a memorial to 27 Canadian soldiers who were executed by the 12th SS, a fitting place to discuss the law of armed conflict. In more details we will explain the advance of the 9th Cdn Inf Bde on Caen and the breakout from the beaches. We will see how this led to a devastating counter-attack by the 12th SS, and how communications issues influence negatively the situational awareness of the higher HQ.

World War One
Vimy Ridge
The study of Vimy ridge will take place from various observation points on this large battlefield. From the Notre-Dame-de-Lorrette cemetery, we will view the entire Canadian Corps Area of operations and will discuss the planning of the battle and its link to the overall Battle of Arras. We will see how the use of aircraft, counter battery fire, communications and rehearsals, were all crucial to this victory. We will discuss how Vimy is an illustration of the "Canadian way of war" during WW1 and how the operational art was practiced in this battle.
Dieppe
The raid on Dieppe on 19 Aug 1942, was by any measure a failure. This study will be conducted on 4 sites: the main beach at Dieppe, Puys beach, the western headland and Pourville. This raid is an excellent example on how operational level commanders and staff failed the tactical level commanders and soldiers. We will discuss in details:
- The European coast raiding campaign
- impact on previous raids on this operation
- Preparations & intelligence
- All arms cooperation and jointness
- potential to achieve of the objectives
At the various sites we will first hand how the battle was conducted, from the point of view of the attackers and defenders. We will make a point to visit the site where LCol Merritt, the Commanding Officer of the South Saskatchewan Regiment won a Victoria Cross.
